Learning French
In this post, I’ll go further in depth into learning (some) French, based on what I’ve learned from learning Spanish.
Module 0 - être, to be
This is a great way to state obvious things like a child.
| Subject-Verb | Object | Note |
|---|---|---|
| je suis | étudiant | identity |
| tu es | française | nationality |
| il/elle/on est | grands | physical trait |
| nous sommes | intelligents | personal trait |
| vous êtes | à Paris | location |
| ils/elles sont | fatigué | temprary state |
The pronoun on is an informal way to say “we”, and it takes the third person singular. The pronoun vous is a polite way to say “you”, and it takes the second person plural, like y’all in English.
Module 1 - être, not to be
This is how negation works in French ne, or n’ if the conjugated verb starts with a vowel, then pas.
| Subject-Verb | Object | Note |
|---|---|---|
| je ne suis pas | professeur | identity |
| tu n’es pas | américain | nationality |
| il/elle/on n’est pas | petit | physical trait |
| nous ne sommes pas | gentil | personal trait |
| vous n’êtes pas | à Londres | location |
| ils/elles ne sont pas | prêt | temprary state |
Usually, ne pas changes the un, une, or des before an object to de, but the verb être is the exception, it does not change un, une, or des. Look out for this later.
Module 2 - avoir, to have
Avoir is used as an auxillary verb for the simple past tense, so learn it well.
| Subject-Verb | Object | Note |
|---|---|---|
| j’ai | 42 ans | age |
| tu as | un livre | a book |
| il/elle/on a | une voiture | a car |
| nous avons | un chien | a dog |
| vous avez | faim | hungry |
| ils/elles ont | soif | thirsty |
